While most centaurs are wild and untamed by nature, Chiron was the wisest and most civilized of them, due to his lineage. Born of the oceanid Philyra and the titan Kronos, who came to her in the form of a horse, Chiron had divine blood coursing through his veins. Raised and tutored by Apollo to understand the art of healing and archery, Chiron in turn was revered as the teacher to the ancient heroes, including Achilles, Jason, and Theseus. His greatest notoriety comes from his death, when Herakles mistakenly shot Chiron with an arrow dipped in Hydra’s blood. Because he was immortal, he couldn’t die from the blow, but the agonizing pain from the poison seeped into him. Because the blood of the mythical Hydra was so rare, he didn’t have the knowledge to heal himself. In this moment, he relinquished his immortality so he could die and no longer be in pain. His half-brother Zeus was so moved by his nobility that he placed him in the stars.
